Neteral Celebrity: Remembering Teena Marie

On December 26th we lost another soul music icon, Ms.Teena (Lady T) Marie. Those of us from a certain age group can remember growing up listening to her music as it blasted its way through the inner city neighborhoods of America and even abroad.  The richness and soul of her music made us marvel at the talents of this multi faceted women. She started out as a protege of funk legend Rick James under the Motown label. She soon carved out her own niche as a solo artist with a number of memorable tunes that will stay with us forever not to mention the new music that she has put out over the last 5 years. She passed away in her sleep at the age of 54 in her Pasadena, California home. She was found by her 19 year old daughter, Alia Rose who’s also a singer, the day after Teena threw a surprise birthday party for her. Many musical artists have commented on her death and have even sung her most popular tunes in honor of the fallen musical legend not to mention the millions of Black people that were shocked by the news of her passing, myself included. Teena Marie you will be missed but your music will live on.

Neteral Celebrity: The Soul of Leela James

In life there are many great tragedies such as famine, teen pregnancies, and black on black murder, which rightfully catch our attention. However, it is the lesser everyday tragedies that seem to escape us and go unnoticed. One of these being the music industry’s unwillingness to promote talented and top notch artists such as Leela James in a time where real music is suffering from an extreme fallout. The current trend of teen and twenty something microwave musical acts with about as much talent as a blinking light are what sadly has the attention of a lot of music listeners only because of industry hype. This however makes true soul music affectionados like myself appreciate rare artists like Leela James much more. This young lady burst onto the scene in 2005 with her debut album titled “A Change is Gonna Come”. Now she’s back with her 2010 release titled “My Soul”. It is what soul music lovers have come to expect and appreciate from James and that is deep roots music. We at NETERAL recommend that all of our readers pick up James’ latest LP if you love good music.
